Rooney and Carrick praise De Gea display

It was a close contest but David De Gea has beaten off competition from Anthony Martial to win Manchester United’s Man of the Match award for Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup semi-final.

The Spanish goalkeeper was truly exceptional in the 2-1 victory over Everton and made a plethora of saves to deny the Toffees, though it was his dramatic penalty stop to thwart Romelu Lukaku in the second half that prompted the loudest cheers of his name among the Reds supporters at Wembley.
Martial scored a game-changing winner in the 93rd minute that means United will contest the FA Cup final against Watford or Crystal Palace next month, and the Frenchman earned 42 per cent of votes cast by followers of @ManUtd. But that was not enough to beat De Gea’s 49 per cent and he has been rightly praised by his team-mates, including fellow Man of the Match nominee Wayne Rooney.
"It was a great penalty save," the captain told MUTV after the final whistle at the national stadium. "The pace with which the ball was hit shows he has a strong arm on him, and Everton had momentum behind them at that time. He’s the main reason why we’ve got to this final."
Michael Carrick also paid tribute to De Gea following his heroics against the Toffees and praised the keeper's incredible consistency in recent seasons.
"I don’t think it was a bad penalty, but David was sensational today – how many times have we said that over the last few years?" the midfielder said.
"He’s kept us in the game again; it’s almost what we’ve come to expect from him. Hopefully he can have quieter games between now and the end of the season!"

Herrera set to return for Palace clash

Ander Herrera is set to return to Manchester United’s squad for Wednesday's game against Crystal Palace and manager Louis van Gaal has no fresh injury concerns following the weekend win over Aston Villa.

Herrera missed the 1-0 victory that relegated Villa on Saturday after picking up a knock in the Emirates FA Cup tie against West Ham United, but is back in contention for the midweek Barclays Premier League clash at Old Trafford as the Reds look to keep up the pressure on Arsenal and Manchester City.
Bastian Schweinsteiger, Adnan Januzaj and Luke Shaw remain sidelined, though the latter has provided a positive update on his recovery from the double leg break he sustained in September.
Van Gaal confirmed to MUTV: "[We have] no injury problems, only the players who are injured already for a long time – Schweinsteiger, Shaw and Januzaj. I think Herrera shall come back."
Asked if Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Everton would impact on his selection for the league encounter with the Eagles, van Gaal replied: "Of course, but that is the same with every game.
"You know that you have to play matches and you know also that some players have difficulties with the load of matches. You have to rotate because of that.
"In the Premier League I have to rotate much more than in another league, and that is also a consequence of the high rhythm of the Premier League."
Marcus Rashford scored United’s winner against Villa – his seventh goal in 12 first-team appearances – before being replaced by Anthony Martial, and van Gaal expects the 18-year-old to lead the line again on Wednesday after allowing him two days away from training.
"I changed him after 70 minutes, I believe, and that is also to give him a little bit of rest," the boss continued. "He didn’t train the day after and also the day after that he didn’t train.
"I want to keep him fresh because he is in the momentum of scoring and that is very important for him but also for the team. That is why I don’t rotate him."
On Shaw, who revealed his return to outdoor training with a physio is going "really well", van Gaal said at his press conference: "He's very positive, he's doing great. He's training with the physiotherapist but he has to train with the football coach and that hasn't happened yet."

Preview: United vs Crystal Palace

Scene-setter: The race for the Barclays Premier League top four is heading towards its climax and Manchester United are four points away from those UEFA Champions League qualification places, with just five games left to play. Victory against Crystal Palace is required and would also boost Louis van Gaal's men ahead of Saturday's Emirates FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, although the Eagles will be motivated opponents because they are yet to cement their top-flight status.
Form guide: United bounced back from the 3-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur by securing a morale-boosting 2-1 win at West Ham in the FA Cup sixth round, before following that up with a gritty 1-0 win over Aston Villa. The Reds have notably not lost any of the 13 previous Premier League matches against Palace, earning 10 wins and three draws in a run that stretches back to September 1992. Despite being 16th in the table, Alan Pardew’s team are unbeaten in four straight matches in April. However, their recent 1-0 win against Norwich City remains their only top-flight victory in 2016.
Last meeting: Back on 31 October, Crystal Palace held United to a frustrating 0-0 draw and that was the Reds' third consecutive goalless match in all competitions. “We did not keep the ball,” said van Gaal. “That's a very important factor and because of that we didn't create too many chances.”
Latest team news: Van Gaal made changes for the win over Villa by resting Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, with Wayne Rooney and Memphis coming in, so it will be interesting to see which of those four will start on Wednesday night. The boss may also be tempted to rotate again, with the FA Cup semi-final against Everton just four days away. Luke Shaw, Adnan Januzaj, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Will Keane could be the only absentees. Palace have injury concerns over Scott Dann, Dwight Gayle, James McArthur, Brede Hangeland, Marouane Chamakh, James McArthur and Kwesi Appiah.
View from the dressing room: “We now have Crystal Palace where hopefully we can win again and then we have the semi-final in the FA Cup. That gives us two very clear aims - to win, if we can, every game in the Premier League to get Champions League football, and then to win the FA Cup, which the club has not won for a few years. We are fully focused on both tasks.” – Juan Mata
Opposition manager: Palace boss Alan Pardew hopes his team's troubles are behind them following a run of positive results, though he would like to pick up more wins in 2016. “We weren't expecting that run [of defeats] to go on as long as it went on,” he explained earlier this month. “The first half of this season we got it right, but the second we haven't. We need to address that. The confidence levels, hopefully, have gone up, and our nervousness has disappeared.”
Danger man: Things didn’t work out for Wilfried Zaha at United but the 23-year-old has impressed since rejoining Palace. A creator of goals, he has also scored five himself in 40 appearances across all competitions and Chris Smalling admits he is expecting a tricky game against his old team-mate. “Crystal Palace are known for having direct and pacey wingers who like to put a lot of balls into the box,” he explained to MUTV ahead of the game. “They play exactly to Wilf’s strengths and he's been able to play in every game. He didn't get that with us but at Palace he's been able to show his ability, week in and week out, in the Premier League.”
Betting: Official partner Marathonbet has priced United as clear favourites to win at odds of 14/15, with Palace at 33/10 and the draw at 61/10. You can also back young Marcus Rashford to score the first or last goal at 39/10. Visit their website via manutd.com/bet for more odds and offers.

Referee: Lancashire-based official Lee Mason will take charge of Wednesday's game at Old Trafford. It will be his 29th match of the season and United fans may remember him from the Capital One Cup clash with Middlesbrough. In total, he has dished out 79 yellow cards and three red cards this term.
